Coping with Attention Deficit Disorder?

I have Attention Deficit Disorder (the one where you can’t concentrate, but aren’t hyper-active).

I’m fed up of not being able to concentrate and It’s taken me all of today to correct spelling mistakes and write a sentence …. I have a deadline on Tuesday!!

Does anyone know what I could do? When I was younger I was put on Ritalin, but that made me depressed, so I’m not too sure about trying other drugs. I want to go to universtiy, but don’t see how I could cope.

There are different ways of coping with ADD to make it easier to focus on something. Some people need to listen to music while they’re working. It all depends on the person.

Concerning medicine, it seems that you may need to take some if it really is a problem. Since Ritalin is a big no, you’re just going to have to have someone to give you another type of medicine and have you monitor back to them whether it worked or not and if it caused any side effects, like depression. Finding the right medicine can take some time, but it can be worth it in the end when you finally find it.

I have NO clue, I know I have that same problem ,always did but Many people do. I don’t have any medicine,I just drive myself nuts and try my best to concentrate as best I can,,I write myself Lots of notes, and I reward myself if I complete things I have a problem with..It doesn’t always work ,,my sister is on medicine and I don’t know if it helps..she says she thinks it does,I am not sure..I still think of checking out the Dr’s to see what I can do, My husband tells me I just try to put the blame on anything but myself and I should just concentrate and focus more…EASY TO SAY if misunderstood..Drives me NUTS! GOOD LUCK! I probably would say talk to a specialist..I should also.

    Hey Buddy,

I used to be in the same boat as you. I have ADD just like you. I think I am qualified to answer the question because I have been on Concerta, the 4 hour Ritalin tablets, Adderall and Metadate (an 8hr Ritalin). I can speak to the different info about each medication. As a child, I was put on Ritalin but it also made me depressed. My doctor told me that mild depression in children can be a relatively common side-effect of Ritalin. I was switched to Concerta which was completely ineffective for me so I was switched to Adderall which worked just ok for me. I was switched off of it when that whole Adderall health scare happened. I was switched to Metadate which is a 8hr Ritalin (both Ritalin and Metadate are composed of the drug: Methylphenidate so they are the same medication) I love Metadate and it does not make me depressed at all. In fact, I found out that Ritalin is sometimes used as an anti-depressant in older people and that children are pretty much the only ones who get depressed from taking Ritalin. Here is a very interesting thing. Even as I was on Concerta, Adderall and Metadate, I was also on the 4hr Ritalin….why you may ask. Think of this, the 8hr medications (Concerta, Adderall and Medtadate) eventually wear off leaving you without any medication to help you concentrate. I take metadate for my classes and use the 4hr Ritalin to study after the Metadate wears off so I can study and get my work done. I am a junior and this has worked beautifully for me. I have tried all sorts of drug combos but this one is helping me succeed in college with a 3.7 GPA. I take four 20mg Metadates in the morning and three 20mg 4hr Ritalins in the evening to study. I like having the 8hr benefit of Metadate for classes but I would not be able to get along college without the 4hr Ritalin to help me study in the evening. Ritalin doesn’t make me depressed any longer but does the opposite instead. It gives me a huge mood boost in the evening which really helps me study. Friend, I hoped that this ramble of info helps you. I suggest you talk to a doctor about what I have just told you. I wish you the best of luck.

    Sincerely,
    Mike L.
